Back in April we went down to see Heidlebeere and took a side trip down Highway 131, which runs along the Kickapoo River. It was still early spring and the leaves weren't out yet. It was really beautiful but we found ourselves commenting that we ought to make the drive again when summer was a little farther along.
One of the reasons we went that way was to see a covered bridge I'd learned of. Then I discovered there was another covered bridge just a few miles north of the one we saw. Well, that was it; we had to make that trip again. So the next time we went to see Heidlebeere we went down Highway 131 again.
This bridge was a little west of Rockton, back on Indian Creek Road. We drove as close as we could but eventually reached a gate and couldn't drive any closer.
The GPS said it was about half a mile beyond the gate so we hopped out and started walking.
It was a nice little hike, lots of green, lots of flowers, lots of birds, and unfortunately, lots of bugs. Lots of rain means lots of bugs. We kept walking because any time you'd stop the mosquitoes would find you.
Then, at last, the bridge came into view. It was a pretty little bridge. Not built for frequent vehicle traffic but you could easily see that cars and trucks did occasionally use the road and the bridge.
It wasn't a big bridge, and it was out in the middle of nowhere. Well, not really out in the middle of nowhere. Its on a a trail that's on the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. Its a really nice area. One of these days we ought to go to the reserve, in the front door, and see the place proper. But today, we walked in.
This bridge wasn't as long as the first one we saw a few months ago. The river it was over was smaller than the other. Its over the Indian Creek whereas the other bridge was over the Kickapoo River. The Indian Creek actually runs out of the Kickapoo River a little above the first bridge we went to.
So we looked around a bit . . .
Walked though and back on the bridge . . .
Checked out Indian Creek flowing under the bridge from the east . . .
And on beyond to the west . . .
And we smiled for the camera. And then we headed back to where we'd left the car so we could get on our way to see Heidlebeere. It was a fun visit, a nice, remote, little bridge. Checked another one off my list.
